The Burley
Oaks website is now up and running! Go to www.burleyoaks.co.uk to keep
up to date with all school information and to find out about sporting
news, School Council, School Association etc. This newsletter will also
be accessible from there. Special thanks to Mr Ross for the design of
the Burley Oaks LogoWeb and to Mr. Sells for creating the website.
GARDENING
CLUB
Our keen gardeners are meeting regularly - keep an eye out for the floral
displays around the school grounds! Now that the scaffolding has been
removed, there are many areas around school which need tidying up. Mrs.
Gilks will be starting work on the sensory garden, greenhouse and front
of school between 9.30am and 12.30 on Sunday 28th May and would be grateful
if any parents could provide a shovel, fork, wheelbarrow or a little spare
time to help!!
POTATO COMPETITION
Each class has planted a potato for our competition this term. All are
growing well and we look forward to digging and weighing out crops! Which
class will have the bumper crop?
RECEPTION
Reception children have had a busy half-term investigating forces. They
held a 'wheelie' day and have been spotted flying kites which they made!
'Fruit
and Veg' Scheme
The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is part of the Department of Health
5 A DAY programme to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. Under the
Scheme, all four to six year old children in infant, primary and special
schools are entitled to a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day.
We would like to encourage more Key Stage 2 children to bring their own
fruit into school to continue to promote healthy eating. Unfortunately,
there is not the funding to allow us to provide it from school.
School Association
The May Ball was a huge success and raised over £1000!
The Summer Fair is organised for 1st July 2006. The winner of the poster
competition which will advertise the fair was Oscar from 1W - congratulations!
We look forward to seeing you all there and thank you in advance for your
donations.
BOOK FAIR
The children will be able to buy from the Book Fair in school from Wednesday
7th to Monday 12th June.
YORKSHIRE
SCULPTURE PARK
Year 2 children visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Their tour of the
grounds gave the children opportunity to appreciate art from different
cultures as they encountered totem poles and cactus sculptures. In the
afternoon, the children were able to create their own sculptures from
wood, scrap metal and chalk, inspired by Spike Milligan's poetry. A sculpture
and Literature exhibition is being organised for after half term so that
you can see their fantastic creations.
BRACKEN
HALL
Year 1 children have been exploring habitats and the creatures found in
them at Bracken Hall. A highlight of the visit was a ride on the Victorian
Tramway which was opened especially.
SPORTING
EVENTS
A wide range of sporting events continue to be a high priority for the
school. This term the children have taken part in a football tournament
at Pool; Y6 have played in a Tag Rugby Tournament run by Keighley Cougars;
four children represented school in a mini tennis tournament at Ilkley
Lawn Tennis Club and we will also be taking part in a Cricket Festival,
further Tag Rugby Tournaments and a Rounders Tournament.
After school coaching has included sensible soccer, cricket coaching,
tennis coaching, the running club, multi-skills and gym club.
Supplementing the curriculum in lesson time, we have had squash taster
sessions for Years 1 to 4 and Rugby coaching from Dave Duxbury.
SATs
All Key Stage SATs are now complete. The children have worked particularly
diligently. The results will be published later next half term.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
As you may know, Burley Oaks has started up a school council made up of
20 pupils (2 from each class) as elected by their classmates. At the council,
we hope to put ideas from children forward at meetings to make the school
day more enjoyable. So far we have sorted out problems with the toilet
and cloakroom areas and we are moving on to playtimes. To summarise, it
has been a great success and we hope to carry on improving the school
from the children's point of view.
Aaron Moorehouse (Y6 pupil and Councillor)
Wharfedale Deli Competition
At the beginning of next term Years 3/4 will be designing a special sandwich
as part of a DT topic. The winner will be on the menu at the Wharfedale
Deli in the near future!
Dinner Money
The cost of dinner money from 6th June - 21st July 06 is £ 42.50.

your cheque card number and child(ren)'s name(s) and classes should be

Claire Hemming
Deputy Headteacher
As a matter
of health and safety, I would like to reiterate that it is dangerous and
against school rules for children to walk through the school car park.
Please could you ensure that your child understands the potential hazards
and avoids this area. Thank you for your cooperation.
