Busy
final weeks
With the end of the school year approaching rapidly, you will understand
that we are all tremendously busy at school. Staff and children are finishing
pieces of work and projects, reports are being written and the KS2 pupils
are adding the final touches to their production of 'Hoodwinked' and the
Leavers' Concert. We were treated on Friday to a 'World Cup Celebration'
assembly where each class had researched and presented information on
many countries with dancing, singing, art work etc. The 'Mini World Cup'
tournament completed a busy and eventful day. The winners of our potato
growing competition will be announced shortly.
SATs
Children in KS1 and KS2 have received excellent SATs results which demonstrate
both the children and staff's hard work and commitment to learning. Congratulations
to all children.
TRANSITION
Once again our story sessions for the children who will enter school in
September's Reception class have been a great success. The transition
activities for children in the rest of the school have been a positive
experience, ensuring that all children are comfortable, prepared and settled
for September's new start.
Staffing
Thank you once again to our Traffic Patrol Officer who has loyally helped
the children make their way across Station Road each morning through rain
or shine this year. On Thursday 13th July she will not be present, therefore,
please ensure that your children are helped safely across the road.
Having
officially retired two years ago, Mrs. Brown, our music teacher, will
now finally 'hang up her baton'. We will be sad to see her go, yet we
are delighted to welcome back to school her replacement, Mrs. Redding
(previous Deputy Headteacher).
Three
of our Teaching Assistants will be leaving at the end of term: Ann Yeadon
- to pursue further studies, Anne Hoffmeyer - to return to Denmark and
Di Warman who is retiring. I would like to pay special tribute to Di who
has worked for the school for many years and whose skill, experience and
commitment will be sorely missed.
We
welcome Miss Worsman to our staff who will be teaching in Year 2 next
year and look forward to her complementing the team in Key Stage 1.
BUILDINGS
IMPROVEMENTS
The roof is now complete after months of people working in school. The
children have been patient and safety conscious throughout this time.
In the summer holidays we will be replacing the windows and as much of
the work as possible should be completed before the children return to
school.
SUMMER
FAIR
Once again, the Summer Fair was a tremendous success on an extortionately
hot afternoon. Thank
you to all the members of The School Association who organised the day
very productively and to those parents who volunteered their help. An
especially big thank you to those who helped clear up whilst England were
playing!! Approximately £1550 was raised for school funds.
OSCAR
WINNERS!!
Burley Oaks' Animation Club were invited to the Bradford Film and Photography
museum having been selected for the finals of the Bradford schools animation
competition. In our category, 90% of the votes were given to our short
animation and we were presented the 'Oscar' as winners of the awards ceremony.
Well done to all the children involved and a special thank you to Mr Sells
for running the club and providing such an opportunity.
Environmental
Talks
Morna Stevens from the Young People's Trust for the Environment and Nature
Conservation, visited school to provide talks on a variety of issues including
Endangered Animals, Minibeasts, British Animals etc. We are very grateful
for her interesting and informative sessions.
Beauty
and the Beast
Year 5 visited Bradford's Alhambra to see the Disney musical 'Beauty and
the Beast'. The production was fantastic and the children learnt lots
of technical and acting tips in preparation for 'Hoodwinked'.
Bolton
Abbey
Years 5 and 6 visited Bolton Abbey to enrich their river study. The walk
from Strid Wood down to the village gave opportunity for identifying a
range of river features as well as a short stop for an ice cream!
LEARN
SPANISH!!
In the May half-term holiday, Mrs Coen visited Oviedo, in Northern Spain
with seven other teachers
from the North of England. The aim of the trip was to learn about the
Spanish education system and to establish links with another primary school.
Mrs. Coen also increased her knowledge of the Spanish language and has
been trained in how to teach young children a foreign language.
Bowling
On Friday afternoons, Year 6 children have been bowling on the village
green. Members of the bowling club have been teaching the skills of the
game and helping the children to understand why the greens need to be
respected.
